UN Security Council Extends Arms Embargo to Libya
10 de junio de 2019, 17:45United Nations, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations (UN) Security Council on Monday unanimously passed resolution 2473 to extend the measures designed to implement an arms embargo on the high seas off the coast of Libya for another 12 months.
This resolution was considered all-important in order to cut off the arms supply to Libya that is currently suffering from a long-standing conflict as well as a severe humanitarian crisis. The South African representation in the UN Security Council has recalled that two months ago began an escalation in such an African territory and stressed that it is urgent to promote reconciliation as soon as possible.Despite the peace agreements signed in Morocco, in December 2015, Libya has been mired in chaos and violence since 2011, when a NATO-led military intervention brought about the overthrow and assassination of Muammar Gaddafi. In the oil nation of North Africa, struggles for the power and actions of militias continue, including groups considered as terrorists, while crime, human trafficking and arms trade also increase.ef/pll/mv/ifb
