UN: Libyan navy rescue over 8000 illegal migrants this year

(MENAFN) On Friday, the United Nations Higher Commission of Refugees (UNHCR) emphasized that the Libyan navy has managed to save lives of over 8,000 undocumented migrants since the beginning of 2019.

The UNHCR stated in a statement, "As of Nov. 8, a total of 8,155 refugees and migrants were rescued/intercepted at sea by the Libyan Coast Guard and disembarked in Libya during 100 operations".

The statement added that during the same duration in 2018, over 14,500 illegal migrants were saved by the Libyan navy.

The commission, along with international partners, has supported migrants and refugees in Libya, in addition to internally displaced people.
