UN Calls on EU to Help Migrants, Refugees in Libyan Centers
Geneva, Jul 12 ( Prensa Latina) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have criticized the migration policy of the European Union (EU) and demanded it to protect refugees and migrants in Libya.
A statement signed by IOM Director-General Antonio Vitorino and UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi states that 'the international community must consider the protection of the human rights of migrants and refugees as the key element of its activities in Libya'.
The statement recalls that on July 3, more than 50 migrants and refugees were massacred and more than 130 injured in bombardments of the Tajoura detention centre, east Tripoli.
The UNHCR pointed out that the incident shows the need to stop the arrest of migrants, as well as the forced return to Libya of those rescued in the Mediterranean.
The joint statement calls on the EU bloc and the African Union 'to prevent such a tragedy from happening again'.
IOM and UNHCR call on the EU to force Tripoli to release the 5,600 refugees and migrants held in Libyan centers and 'to guarantee their protection or send them to other countries where emergency resettlements will have to be implemented'.
