Libya: German Government Planning Conference to Bring Together Warring Sides, Ambassador ...

What Happened: The German government is in the early stages of organizing a conference in coordination with the United Nations to bring together major stakeholders of the Libyan civil war, including Libyan National Army (LNA) Field Marshall Khalifa Hifter and Government of National Accord Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, according to the German ambassador to Libya, Reuters reported Sept. 11.

Why It Matters: Unlike previous attempts by France and Italy, Germany could insert itself as a more neutral broker to facilitate communication between the warring sides. If successful, the conference would mark the first meeting between Libya's rivals since the LNA launched its offensive on Tripoli in April.

Background: France and Italy previously hosted conferences to bring about a political solution and form a unity government in Libya, but Paris' and Rome's support for opposing sides have made it increasingly difficult to solve the ongoing conflict.
