Greek PM Sets Sights on Meeting Trump in Washington

ATHENS – After a planned September meeting was postponed as talk of an impeachment inquiry was beginning, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis now is due to meet President Donald Trump in Washington on Jan. 7, said Kathimerini.

That will come at a touchy time, with Turkey ramping up provocations in the Aegean and East Mediterranean and claiming Greek sovereign waters, with Trump alternately warning Turkey but saying President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a friend.

The US and Greece signed a military cooperation deal this year and had a strategic dialogue to bring the countries closer but there are worries the volatile Trump should shift his support to Turkey more.

Erdogan also has warned of sending millions more refugees and migrants to Greek islands and the European Union – which closed its borders to them – and a time European Union, reluctant to confront him, has issued only soft sanctions over Turkey drilling for oil and gas in Cypriot waters.

An apparently-emboldened Erdogan then signed an agreement with Libya resetting maritime borders in the seas with Turkey claiming areas around Rhodes and as far as Crete, setting off Greek protests to no avail.

Mitsotakis plans to meet Erdogan Dec. 4 during a meeting of NATO countries in London, with the defense alliance saying it won’t get involved in issues between the countries, although both are members and Turkey has also sent fighter jets repeatedly into Greek air space, setting off occasional mock dog fights between pilots of the countries. source
