French missiles are found at base loyal to Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar

France has admitted that US anti-tank missiles it deployed in Libya have been found in the possession of a rebel general laying siege to the capital Tripoli.

The weapons were discovered when forces loyal to the government staged a counterattack on Gharyan, south of the capital. The town was captured in April by the Libyan National Army, a rebel unit led by the self-styled Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, a Gaddafi-era general.

The transfer of missiles to his forces would flout a UN weapons embargo on all sides in the civil war. It would also breach the end-user certificate system, which dictates that an exported weapon cannot be sold on without permission from the country of manufacture.
